Frankie J. Golden, aged 42, was tragically shot to death on the night of February 27, 2018, in Minneapolis, MN. The incident occurred outside a home on the 700 block of East 18th Street, where Golden was waiting to see his nine-month-old son. While standing on the sidewalk and using his phone, Golden was approached by Antwan Darnell Cosey, aged 38.
An argument ensued between the two men, during which Cosey pulled a gun from his waistband and shot Golden in the chest, resulting in a fatal wound.
Following the shooting, Cosey fled the scene and, four days later, purchased a bus ticket to leave the state. He was apprehended on March 9, 2018, at a Greyhound bus station in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, thanks to witness interviews that helped police identify him as the suspect. Cosey was subsequently charged with second-degree murder.
During the trial, which lasted a week in June 2019, Cosey claimed he acted in self-defense, but this was dismissed by Hennepin County District Judge Kathryn Quaintance based on the evidence presented. The judge also noted Cosey's extensive criminal history, which included violent offenses involving weapons, as a factor in the sentencing. On July 12, 2019, Cosey was sentenced to 450 months in prison for the murder of Frankie Golden. The sentencing brought some closure to Golden's family, who spoke in court about the significant void his death had left in their lives.
