In the warm evening hours of August 7, 2021, Prince Hinton, a 31-year-old Black male, was standing outside the Winner Gas Station in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The bustling corner of West Broadway and Lyndale Avenues North became the scene of a tragedy when gunfire erupted, and Hinton was fatally wounded. He was rushed to North Memorial Health Hospital but ultimately succumbed to a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
His death was officially ruled a homicide by the medical examiner, prompting an investigation by the Minneapolis Police Department.
Prince Hinton, also known as Prince Shamir Martin, was a father of four children. In the wake of his death, his mother, LaShae Hinton, made a public plea for an end to the gun violence that had claimed her son's life. She urged the community to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible.
Law enforcement officials noted that Hinton was a prominent member of the YNT/Taliban street gang. Investigators expressed concern that his killing could spark retaliatory violence in the city. The day after Hinton's death, a retaliatory shooting occurred, leading to the arrests of four men.
