On a Thursday afternoon in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on September 23, 2021, a young man named Jarrid Neadeau-Lyons, aged 22, lost his life in a fatal encounter at a BP gas station located at the intersection of Suburban and White Bear avenues. The tragic events unfolded from a seemingly minor dispute that escalated with devastating consequences.
The incident began when Warsame Ahmed Abdihoosh, then 24 years old, was having trouble paying for his gas and became argumentative with the
cashier. Neadeau-Lyons's girlfriend, who was present and knew the cashier, intervened in an attempt to defend her. This led to Abdihoosh allegedly threatening to spit on her. She then went outside to inform Neadeau-Lyons of the hostile interaction. In response, Neadeau-Lyons approached Abdihoosh, who was seated in his Mercedes-Benz at a gas pump, and a physical altercation ensued, during which Neadeau-Lyons punched him.
What happened next was swift and fatal. Abdihoosh responded to being struck by grabbing a stolen 9mm handgun. He fired at Neadeau-Lyons, striking him. As Neadeau-Lyons attempted to retreat, Abdihoosh exited his vehicle and fired again, inflicting the fatal wound. Emergency services were called to the scene, and state troopers were the first to render aid to Neadeau-Lyons before he was transported to Regions Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the chest.
In the immediate aftermath, Abdihoosh fled the scene. However, thanks to the help of witnesses who were able to identify him, law enforcement quickly tracked his vehicle to his residence. A spent shell casing was reportedly found on the driver's seat of his car. Through the cooperative efforts of his family and the police, Abdihoosh was persuaded to turn himself in and was arrested without incident just hours after the shooting. He was subsequently charged with two counts of second-degree murder. During questioning, he admitted to the shooting, stating he didn't know what to do after being punched. In July 2022, as part of a plea agreement, Warsame Ahmed Abdihoosh was sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison for the murder of Jarrid Neadeau-Lyons. He was also ordered to pay nearly $22,000 in restitution.
