In the early morning hours of January 10, 2026, a dispute over a piece of clothing tragically escalated, leading to the death of 19-year-old Nehemiah Davis of Coon Rapids. The incident occurred at the Cedarview Commons apartment complex in North St. Paul, where police were dispatched around 7:04 a.m. following a report of an assault. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Davis with a gunshot wound to his face.
Despite immediate life-saving efforts by the police and emergency medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting led police to identify 23-year-old Zay'Vion Dontavious Edgerson of St. Paul as the primary suspect. According to the criminal complaint, a resident of the apartment let Edgerson and two friends, one of whom was Davis, into her home after they knocked on a bedroom window. Shortly after, she heard the sound of a fight followed by a pop. A witness later told police that Edgerson and Davis got into an argument over a sweatshirt, which escalated to them hitting each other before Edgerson pulled out a handgun and shot Davis.
Edgerson was arrested on January 13 and has since been charged in Ramsey County District Court with second-degree murder. At the time of the incident, he was on probation for a prior domestic assault conviction, a sentence which included a prohibition from possessing firearms. His criminal history also includes convictions for making threats of violence, fleeing the police, and illegal gun possession. Following his arrest, a search of the vehicle Edgerson drove that morning and the residence where he was found led to the discovery of multiple handguns. He is currently being held in the Ramsey County Jail on a $2.5 million bail. The investigation is ongoing, with assistance from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
