On April 1, 2024, 19-year-old Omar Noor Nunow was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the head in a St. Paul, Minnesota apartment. Initially reported as a suicide, the incident occurred around 2 p.m. on the 1900 block of Marshall Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered Nunow deceased at the scene.
During the investigation, inconsistencies emerged in witness statements, prompting further scrutiny.
An 18-year-old friend of Nunow, Adnan Abdullahi Abdi, was present at the scene and initially claimed that Nunow had shot himself. However, under questioning, Abdi admitted to accidentally shooting Nunow. He confessed that he had intended to 'scare' Nunow by pointing a gun at him and saying 'Freeze' as Nunow returned from the bathroom, not realizing the firearm was loaded.
As a result of his admission, Abdi was arrested and charged with second-degree manslaughter. He remains in custody at the Ramsey County Jail on $1 million bail, with his first court appearance scheduled shortly after the incident. This tragic event marked the sixth homicide in St. Paul for the year 2024.
