In the summer of 2022, the life of Daniel Peter Bzdok, a 62-year-old Caucasian male, was brought to a tragic and unexpected end. An avid hunter and fisherman, he had recently retired and was looking forward to spending more time at his cabin in Fleming Township, a quiet area in Aitkin County, Minnesota. On July 22, 2022, he traveled to this retreat with his 24-year-old son, Ronald Bzdok. This trip, however, would be his last. Communication from Daniel ceased after Saturday, July 23, causing concern to grow among his family members.
Daniel's brother, Adam, became particularly worried after numerous calls to Daniel's phone went unanswered. On July 26, he drove to the cabin to check on his brother, only to find the main door padlocked from the outside and no vehicles in sight. This discovery amplified the sense of alarm, and the Aitkin County Sheriff's Office was contacted for a welfare check on the evening of July 27. When a deputy arrived, they peered through a dining room window and saw a grim scene: a man was slumped in a chair, visibly deceased with blood on his chest.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was called to the scene and executed a search warrant in the early hours of the next morning. Inside, they found Daniel Bzdok, who had been shot once in the back of the head with what appeared to be a. 22 caliber weapon. A single empty casing lay near his body. Investigators also discovered a note that shed light on a deep-seated family conflict. The note indicated that Daniel believed his sons, who reportedly struggled with addiction, had been stealing from him and that he planned to report them to law enforcement and obtain a restraining order.
Suspicion quickly fell upon his son, Ronald Bzdok. It was discovered that Ronald had been arrested on the evening of July 23—the last day anyone had heard from his father—while driving Daniel's car. During that arrest, he was found to be in possession of a handgun. Daniel's brother informed investigators that Daniel would never have permitted his son to drive his car or have his firearm. Following the discovery of his father's body, Ronald was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. In October 2023, Ronald Bzdok, then 25, pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to over 25 years in prison for the murder of his father.
