On the evening of September 14, 2021, Harvey Jay Williams, a 29-year-old Black/African American man, was driving in North Minneapolis when his life was tragically cut short. Williams, a beloved and influential teacher at the KIPP Minneapolis Legacy Campus, was a man with a personal mission to positively impact the lives of his students and the young men in his community.
He was known not just as an educator, but also as a father and a rising clothing designer, a man deeply loved by many.
Just before 8 p.m., a series of events unfolded that ended in senseless violence. Williams was driving near North 49th Avenue when he was struck by multiple gunshots. The assault caused him to lose control of his vehicle, which then crashed from the Lyndale Avenue on-ramp onto Interstate 94, coming to rest in a ditch. Police were alerted to the situation by a ShotSpotter activation in the area and several 911 calls reporting the crash. When Hennepin County sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, they found Williams deceased. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that he died from multiple gunshot wounds and ruled his death a homicide.
In the wake of the shooting, the community mourned the loss of a man described as heroic and a positive force. His school was so deeply affected that it closed for a day to allow students and staff time for healing and reflection, issuing a statement lamenting another act of violence taking the life of a Black man who was so cherished. Police believe that Williams was targeted and that the weapon used may have been an assault rifle or one modified for automatic fire. Despite the ongoing investigation into his death, no arrests have been announced, and authorities have not released any descriptions of potential suspects. The case remains unsolved, leaving his family, friends, and community waiting for justice.
