On the evening of April 12, 2024, Minneapolis police responded to reports of a shooting near the 3600 block of Penn Avenue North. Upon arrival, officers found 27-year-old James Nelson Purifoy lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his torso. He was transported to North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale, where he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of April 13.
Originally from Chicago, Illinois, James was affectionately known as 'Dulu' to family and friends.
Born on November 9, 1996, to Fannie Ladell Braggs and James N. Purifoy II, he was baptized at an early age at Sheldon Heights Church of Christ. James completed his high school education in Duluth, Minnesota, in 2016. He was known for his charismatic personality, love for music, and a passion for working on cars and in construction. He is survived by his mother, siblings, and his daughter, Ta'myira Lashay Johnson-Purifoy.
The Minneapolis Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding James's death. As of now, no arrests have been made. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers to assist in bringing closure to this tragic incident.
