Jonathan “Jack” Petrovich, 23, male, was found dead just after midday on February 22, 2020, inside his family’s Apple Valley home, a suburb south of Saint Paul. Officers responding to a call discovered three people shot to death: Jonathan; his mother, Janice Lucille Petrovich, 60; and his older brother, Alexander James Petrovich, 27. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner later ruled Jonathan’s and Janice’s deaths homicides and Alexander’s death a suicide, fixing the time of death at
12:18 p.m. that Saturday.
Investigators pieced together a grim sequence from a search-warrant affidavit and scene evidence. Police said Janice lived at the residence with her two adult sons on the 13600 block of Upper Elkwood Court. Inside, officers found all three with gunshot wounds; court records and follow-up reports indicated Alexander shot his mother and brother before killing himself. Authorities pointed to Alexander as the lone suspect, citing prior mental-health struggles referenced in police statements and court filings. Local reporting relayed that Alexander had experienced untreated symptoms for much of his adult life, and investigators concluded the case as a double murder followed by suicide. Because the suspected shooter died at the scene, there were no arrests, and police did not seek additional suspects.
In the immediate aftermath, relatives and community members publicly identified the victims and mourned the loss, while memorial pages and local outlets recorded Jonathan’s name and age and placed the tragedy within the Saint Paul area. Though early listings sometimes referenced Saint Paul as the location, official accounts consistently situated the crime at the Apple Valley residence, where investigators documented the murders and suicide in a single, contained incident.
