In the crisp autumn air of November 18, 2022, the life of 17-year-old Syoka Siko, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence in a Minneapolis suburb. A promising student-athlete, Siko was known for his talent on the basketball court, having been a member of Park Center High School's state championship team before transferring to Andover High School for his senior year.
He was an honor roll student with a bright future ahead of him.
On that fateful Friday evening, Siko was in a vehicle with three other teenagers at the Regent Apartments in Brooklyn Park. It is believed that one of the passengers attempted to fire a gun out of the vehicle, but the bullets tragically struck those inside instead. Both Siko and another 17-year-old were hit by the gunfire. In the chaotic aftermath, the driver of the car sped away, stopping to hide the weapons before eventually pulling over on an exit ramp of Interstate 94 in north Minneapolis and calling 911. First responders arrived to find the two wounded teenagers, who were then rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Syoka Siko succumbed to his injuries. The other teen was treated for non-critical wounds.
The investigation into Siko's death quickly focused on the other occupants of the vehicle, who were described by police as his friends. A significant development in the case came with the discovery that the firearms used were "ghost guns," untraceable weapons assembled from parts purchased online. A search of the home of two of the teens, 17-year-old twin brothers, uncovered evidence related to the acquisition and assembly of these illegal firearms.
Subsequently, two 17-year-olds were arrested in connection with the shooting. The twin brothers were charged with weapons-related offenses, including possessing a gun without a serial number and underage possession of a firearm. While authorities believe they have the shooter in custody, the investigation has been complicated by a lack of cooperation from some of the witnesses. Police have indicated that one of the twins is believed to be the person who pulled the trigger. The tragic death of Syoka Siko has left his family, friends, and the broader community mourning the loss of a young man with immense potential.
