In the autumn of 1899, a sense of duty called Officer Robert A. Dickerson to assist fellow lawmen in the town of Doniphan, located in Doniphan County, Kansas. A store robbery had been committed, and a posse was formed to track down the perpetrators. Officer Dickerson, a member of the Atchison Police Department, joined the pursuit of the suspects. The chase led them first to an abandoned house, but the criminals managed to slip away.
The posse tracked the suspects to a nearby river, where
the fugitives had barricaded themselves behind a makeshift fortress of logs and brush. A tense standoff ensued, with the lawmen holding their positions throughout the night. As dawn broke on the morning of October 23, 1899, the decision was made to storm the suspects' hiding place. In the ensuing confrontation, Officer Dickerson was fatally wounded by gunfire.
Despite the loss of one of their own, the posse continued their efforts to apprehend the suspects, keeping them pinned down for another night. However, under the cloak of darkness, the suspects managed to evade the lawmen and disappeared. The individuals responsible for the robbery and the death of Officer Robert A. Dickerson were never apprehended.
