James Edward Roberts, 51, male, was a deputized civilian from the Council Grove area in Morris County, Kansas. On the night of May 12, 1900, he joined another local man in taking up a watch on the railroad bridge just north of Dunlap, hoping to intercept two men who had broken out of the Marysville jail days earlier.
