On a late afternoon in Topeka, Kansas, on May 31, 2014, a group of young men were gathered at Freedom Valley Park, enjoying a game of basketball and spending time together in the parking lot. Among them was Germaul Rayton, a 20-year-old Black / African American male. The casual gathering took a tragic turn when a vehicle, described by witnesses as a red SUV, drove past the park. Multiple shots were fired from the vehicle towards the group of men.
In the ensuing chaos, Germaul Rayton was struck by a bullet in the right side of his back. The projectile tore through his right lung and damaged a major pulmonary artery before exiting his chest. As the shooting ceased, friends rushed to his aid, transporting him to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, Germaul succumbed to the devastating gunshot wound and was pronounced dead. Two other individuals, Ahmad Rayton and Anthony Marshall, were also wounded in the shooting but survived their injuries.
The investigation into the shooting led law enforcement to identify Jourdan Mickel Hunt as the driver and shooter. Hunt claimed that as he drove past the park, he saw individuals who had previously shot at and attempted to rob him, and that the group at the park shot at him first, prompting him to fire back in self-defense. He also stated that had he known Germaul was at the park, he would have continued driving and avoided the confrontation.
Ultimately, a jury convicted Jourdan Mickel Hunt of one count of second-degree intentional murder for the death of Germaul Rayton and two counts of aggravated intentional battery for the injuries sustained by the other two victims. For the murder conviction, Hunt was sentenced to 176 months of incarceration, with additional consecutive sentences for the aggravated battery charges, resulting in a total of 258 months in prison. An appeal of his convictions was later denied.
