On March 19, 2015, in Kansas City, Kansas, 37-year-old Caucasian female Melinda Bates-Fuller was tragically killed in a violent shooting inside a home. The incident, which also left a man critically injured, unfolded in the 800 block of North 70th Street.
The events leading to the fatal shooting began when Scottie Lindsay, who was staying at the residence with Bates-Fuller and Julius Boyd, woke up agitated, believing his cocaine had been stolen.
Suspecting another houseguest, Michael Wright, had taken the drugs, Lindsay left the house and returned with a pistol. Upon his return, an argument ensued over the missing drugs. During the confrontation, Boyd was shot twice by Lindsay.
Following the initial shooting, Lindsay and Wright went upstairs where Bates-Fuller was. Boyd, who was wounded downstairs, reported hearing more gunshots from the upper level of the house. Responding officers later found Melinda Bates-Fuller deceased in the home from gunshot wounds. A man was also found at the scene with critical injuries.
An investigation into the double shooting led to the arrest of Scottie Lindsay. In January 2016, a jury convicted the 30-year-old Lindsay of second-degree murder for the death of Melinda Bates-Fuller and attempted second-degree murder for the shooting of the other man. He was subsequently sentenced for his crimes.
