On the evening of May 18, 2023, a domestic dispute in Kansas City, Kansas, escalated into a tragic act of violence that claimed the life of 29-year-old Kristy C. Thow. The incident, which unfolded at her mother's home, also resulted in the death of her mother, 50-year-old Penny Smith, and the suspected shooter.
Police responded to reports of a shooting at a residence in the 2700 block of North 123rd Street shortly before 11 p.m.
Upon arrival, they discovered three women outside the house with critical injuries. Kristy C. Thow was pronounced dead at the hospital. Her mother, Penny Smith, succumbed to her injuries a few days later. A third woman, identified as Kristy's sister, was also shot but survived her injuries.
The investigation revealed that the shooter was Penny Smith's 51-year-old husband, Christopher Smith. It is believed that he shot his wife, stepdaughter, and another stepdaughter before turning the gun on himself. Christopher Smith was found deceased inside the home from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities have categorized the event as a murder-suicide, and as the sole suspect is deceased, no arrests have been made.
Family members described Kristy as a hero who was shot multiple times while trying to protect her mother and sister from the gunman. She was a single mother to a young daughter and was remembered for her kind heart and dedication to her family.
