In the summer of 2019, the life of 49-year-old Sylvia Ann Ussery-Pearson, a Black/African American female, came to a tragic end. Her disappearance on Monday, August 12, 2019, from her Overland Park, Kansas, home set in motion a chain of events that would end in two deaths and leave a family grieving. Ussery-Pearson was reported missing after she left her home and did not return, an act described as highly out of character for her.
The search for Ussery-Pearson took a grim turn the
following day. Her estranged husband, 51-year-old Charles Pearson, walked into a hotel near the Legends Outlets in Kansas City, Kansas, and confessed to employees that he had killed his wife. Heavily armed with an AR-15 style rifle, he then engaged in a shootout with police officers in the vicinity and was fatally shot.
Following the violent confrontation with Charles Pearson, investigators discovered a handwritten note in his Lenexa home. This note contained a diagram that led authorities to a specific location in Benton County, Arkansas. There, in the Lost Bridge area of Garfield, they found Sylvia Ann Ussery-Pearson's body on the evening of Tuesday, August 13, 2019.
Investigators quickly focused on Charles Pearson as the sole suspect in his wife's death, which was being investigated as a homicide. The couple had been estranged, and court records revealed a history of domestic trouble. In October of the previous year, Charles Pearson had been charged with misdemeanor criminal damage to property in a domestic violence incident involving his wife. As part of a diversion agreement in that case, he had been ordered not to possess any firearms. Friends of Ussery-Pearson described her marriage as "toxic" and recounted incidents of physical abuse she had endured.
