In a quiet Kansas City, Kansas neighborhood, the evening of March 7, 2016, turned into a scene of unimaginable violence that claimed the life of 29-year-old Austin Lee Harter, a Caucasian male, and three other men. The tragedy unfolded at a small, one-story home on South 36th Street, a place where friends had gathered.
That night, Austin was on the front porch of his friend Mike Capps' house when he was shot. Despite his injuries, he managed to make a desperate call to 911 for help.
Inside the home, the gunman continued his rampage, fatally shooting Austin's younger brother, 27-year-old Clint Harter, along with their friends Mike Capps, 41, and Jeremy Waters, 36. For hours, family members, including Clint's pregnant wife, waited anxiously behind police lines, only receiving the devastating confirmation of their loved ones' deaths early the next morning.
The horrific event sparked an intense manhunt for the suspected shooter, who was identified as Pablo Serrano-Vitorino, a neighbor of one of the victims. Friends and the tight-knit community were left in shock and disbelief, struggling to comprehend a motive for the senseless killings of men they described as decent and friendly. The two brothers, Austin and Clint, were known to be inseparable.
After fleeing the scene in Kansas, Serrano-Vitorino’s deadly spree continued. He was linked to the killing of a fifth man, 49-year-old Randy Nordman, in Montgomery County, Missouri. The search for him involved nearly 100 law enforcement officers. The manhunt concluded the following day when an exhausted Serrano-Vitorino was captured and taken into custody in Missouri. He was later charged with four counts of first-degree murder for the killings in Kansas City.
