On a summer evening in Kansas City, Kansas, a dispute between neighbors escalated into a fatal encounter for 40-year-old Hispanic male, William Rodella-Mecino. The incident, which occurred on July 20, 2016, began after Ruben Sandoval, a neighbor of Rodella-Mecino, witnessed him and another man drive by his house twice, making hand gestures that mimicked guns.
This prompted a heated argument between the two men.
The verbal confrontation drew the attention of others, including Nicholas Alexander Miller, the son-in-law of Ruben's father. As the argument intensified, Rodella-Mecino produced a pistol, holding it at his side without pointing it at anyone. Miller, perceiving a threat, retrieved an AR-15 rifle from a vehicle and demanded that Rodella-Mecino drop his weapon. Although initially pulled away from the scene, Miller, still believing Rodella-Mecino posed a danger, circled back to the rear of Rodella-Mecino's property.
From this new vantage point, Miller approached Rodella-Mecino, who was then on his own porch. Miller fired his rifle, striking Rodella-Mecino. Rodella-Mecino was transported to a hospital where he died from his injuries.
Following an investigation into the shooting, Nicholas Alexander Miller was arrested. On March 15, 2018, a jury found Miller guilty of second-degree murder for the death of William Rodella-Mecino. He was subsequently convicted for his role in the fatal shooting.
