In the morning hours of November 3, 2017, a young Black/African American man named Darrian D. Stevens, aged 20, was fatally shot in Kansas City, Kansas. He was behind the wheel of his maroon Ford Fusion, waiting at a red light near 78th Street and Interstate 70, when another car pulled alongside him.
As the light turned green and the cars began to move, a person inside the second vehicle, a gray 2004-2007 Dodge Stratus, opened fire on Stevens' car.
The Ford Fusion continued to travel south before it crashed into a blue Ford Escape. When authorities arrived at the scene of the accident, they discovered Stevens inside his vehicle with fatal gunshot wounds. The driver of the Ford Escape sustained minor injuries in the collision.
An unidentified passenger who had been in the car with Stevens fled the scene before police could intervene. Investigators released a description of the suspect as a Black male armed with a silver semiautomatic handgun. Surveillance footage captured images of the suspect's gray Dodge Stratus. Despite these leads and a public appeal for information, no arrests have been made in the case, and the investigation into the death of Darrian Stevens remains open.
