In the pre-dawn hours of December 16, 2018, the life of 15-year-old Taveon Brooks, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Kansas City, Kansas. A sophomore at F.L. Schlagle High School, he was known as a talented point guard on the basketball team and had a passion for creating music. Friends and family remembered him as a creative soul who enjoyed writing and making his own songs.
His mother, Tionna VanRoss House, had recently been released from prison and was hoping to reconnect with her son, who had been living with another relative.
On that fatal Sunday morning, at roughly 2:45 a.m., Taveon was driving a car with a group of other young people when their vehicle was targeted by gunfire. The shooting caused Taveon to lose control of the car, which then crashed into a tree. When emergency services arrived at the scene near 52nd and Georgia, they discovered that Taveon had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Another teenager in the car was also injured in the attack and was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
The sudden and violent nature of Taveon's death left his family reeling with grief and searching for answers. His mother expressed her deep sorrow, lamenting the loss of her "baby" and the future he would never have. The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department opened an investigation into the homicide, seeking to understand the motive behind the shooting and to identify those responsible. In the immediate aftermath, no suspects were publicly named, and no arrests were announced, leaving a community to mourn the loss of a promising young life.
