In the quiet of a late Tuesday morning on April 21, 2020, the life of Michael Castleberry, a 45-year-old Black man, was tragically cut short in Kansas City, Kansas. A neighbor's alert to the sound of a gunshot just before 11:20 a.m. brought police to a home nestled in the 1800 block of Walker Avenue. Inside, responding officers made the grim discovery of Mr.
Castleberry, who had been fatally shot.
The investigation into the homicide quickly moved forward, and within a matter of days, a suspect was taken into custody. Laron E. Betts, also 45 years old at the time, was arrested in connection with the shooting. The Wyandotte County District Attorney's Office formally charged Betts with second-degree murder for his alleged role in Michael Castleberry's death. An additional misdemeanor charge of criminal damage to property was also filed against him.
Following his arrest, a bond for Laron E. Betts was set at $500,000. Michael Castleberry was remembered in an obituary as a man survived by two daughters, siblings, and a host of other family members and friends who mourned his sudden and violent passing.
