In the quiet moments of a Topeka, Kansas evening on March 16, 2019, the life of Robert McKinsey James, a 25-year-old Caucasian male, was tragically cut short. Known to his loved ones as RJ, he was returning home with food for his fiancée when he was fatally shot outside of their apartment. His sudden and violent death left a void in the lives of those who knew and loved him, a community that remembered him as a vibrant young man with a passion for sports, having played baseball, basketball,
and football at Washburn Rural High School.
The years that followed were filled with grief and unanswered questions for his family, which included his mother, four siblings, and his fiancée. The pain of their loss was compounded by the birth of his daughter in September 2019, a child who would only know her father through the stories and memories shared by others. The investigation into his murder was a long and arduous process, stretching on for years without a resolution, leaving a sense of unresolved justice hanging over his memory.
