In the early morning hours of December 3, 2019, the life of 31-year-old Robert Junior, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in Wichita, Kansas. A neighbor discovered Junior with critical gunshot wounds near the driveway of a duplex in the 8500 block of East Parkmont. Emergency services were called to the scene around 2:20 a.m., and Junior was rushed to a local hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The incident was quickly determined by police not to be a random act of violence.
The investigation into Robert Junior’s death led police to a suspect, Chevy Omar Jones. A few days after the shooting, on a Friday evening, officers located Jones getting into a car in an apartment parking lot. When they attempted to apprehend him, Jones fled, ramming his vehicle into a police lieutenant's cruiser before attempting to escape on foot. He was pursued and subsequently arrested inside a nearby Walmart, where he was found to be in possession of a handgun.
Prosecutors revealed that the motive for the murder was jealousy. Jones had discovered that the mother of his child had been in a relationship with Junior. In a premeditated act, Jones used another woman's social media account to lure Junior into a meeting. When Junior came to the door of his home, Jones shot him. In April 2024, a jury found Chevy Omar Jones guilty of first-degree premeditated murder, as well as other charges related to the incident. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison and will not be eligible for parole for at least 51.5 years.
