Who killed Hamp Lewis?
On a Wednesday in early June of 2004, concern grew for an African-American man named Hamp Lewis when his daughter was unable to reach him. This concern led her to his home at 2037 N Minneapolis in Wichita, Kansas, on June 9th, where she made a tragic discovery. Inside the residence, she found her father, a 79-year-old male, deceased. It was apparent that he had suffered trauma to his head, and his death was investigated as a homicide.
Hamp Snead Lewis, a retired Santa Fe Railroad worker, was a father to three sons and three daughters. His family, including a sister, sixteen grandchildren, and thirty great-grandchildren, was left to mourn his unexpected and violent death. A funeral service was held the following Monday at St. Andrew Missionary Baptist Church.
The circumstances surrounding the death of Hamp Lewis remain a mystery. To this day, the case is considered cold, with no arrests having been made and no suspects publicly identified in connection with his killing. The Wichita Police Department continues to list his case as an unsolved homicide.
