On the first day of the new year, January 1, 2020, the life of 22-year-old Alicia Lyn Roman was tragically cut short in Wichita, Kansas. Inside a room at the Hotel at WaterWalk, located in the 700 block of South Main, a violent encounter unfolded that would leave two people dead. Alicia, a female, was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds, a victim of a brutal shooting.
Alongside her was another victim, George M. Kirksey, who had also been fatally shot.
Both Alicia and George were pronounced dead at the scene, their lives ended in a sudden and violent manner. The festive spirit of New Year's Day was shattered by the grim discovery, launching a homicide investigation into the double murder.
The investigation into the deaths of Alicia and George quickly identified a suspect: 37-year-old Kyle Young. It was determined that Young had entered the hotel room where Alicia and George were and opened fire, shooting both of them multiple times before making his escape on foot. The motive for this violent act was not immediately clear, but the authorities began a search for the man they believed was responsible for the two deaths.
Kyle Young was later located and apprehended by law enforcement. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree premeditated murder for the deaths of Alicia Roman and George Kirksey. In October of 2023, Young pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. As a result of his plea, he was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences in prison. The terms of his sentence stipulate that he will not be eligible for parole for at least 100 years, ensuring he will spend the remainder of his life behind bars for the murders of Alicia Lyn Roman and George M. Kirksey.
