On a fall morning in Topeka, Kansas, the life of 38-year-old Christopher McMillon, a Black/African American male, came to a tragic end. On October 3, 2020, police officers were dispatched to his residence near Southwest 3rd Street and Southwest Polk Street to conduct a welfare check. Inside, they made a grim discovery; McMillon was found deceased, having suffered from apparent gunshot wounds.
The Topeka Police Department immediately deemed the death suspicious and launched a homicide investigation into the shooting.
The investigation that followed would unravel a story of debt and betrayal. It was revealed that Christopher McMillon had a business arrangement with Todge Anton Anderson involving the supply of synthetic marijuana. Anderson owed McMillon money for a quantity of the product. In the early hours of October 3rd, Anderson, accompanied by two women, Tishara Moran and Latrelle Praylow, went to McMillon's home. Once inside, Anderson fatally shot McMillon. Following the shooting, Anderson directed his accomplices to take valuable items from the residence. Surveillance footage from a neighbor's camera captured a man and two women entering McMillon's home around 12:33 a.m. and leaving approximately seven minutes later, with one of the women carrying a television.
Through their investigation, law enforcement identified the individuals in the video as Anderson, Moran, and Praylow. Both Moran and Praylow later identified Anderson as the man with them and provided details of the events that transpired that night. The search for the suspects extended beyond Kansas. Moran was apprehended a few days after the murder near Lawrence. Praylow was arrested weeks later in Seattle, Washington, where she had traveled under a different name. The main suspect, Todge Anton Anderson, was eventually located and taken into custody in Omaha, Nebraska, in early January 2021. A jury later convicted Anderson on multiple charges, including first-degree felony murder and aggravated robbery, for his role in the death of Christopher McMillon.
