On the evening of October 21, 2020, amidst the sounds of a youth football game in Wichita, Kansas, the life of 31-year-old Marquell Marky Nolen, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. Nolen was at the Stryker Sports Complex when a verbal argument broke out on the west side of the stadium bleachers. The dispute, which was not related to the game, escalated horrifically when a man pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking Nolen.
The gunman fled the scene on foot, creating panic among the children and families present. Two individuals who were with Nolen rushed him in a private vehicle to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his gunshot wounds.
The Wichita Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the homicide. Detectives determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence; Nolen and his assailant knew each other and were reportedly involved in an ongoing feud. The incident caused widespread concern in the community, leading to the cancellation of the remainder of the youth football season. Investigators worked diligently to identify the person responsible for the public act of violence that had shaken the city.
The investigation led police to Maurice Antonio Hall, a resident of Garland, Texas. With the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service, Hall was arrested without incident during a vehicle stop in Wichita on November 3, 2020. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. According to reports, Hall was on his way to his lawyer's office to arrange his surrender at the time of his arrest.

In August 2022, a Sedgwick County jury acquitted Hall of the first-degree murder charge. However, he was found guilty of criminal possession of a weapon by a felon.
