On the evening of December 21, 2021, a grim discovery was made in a home on Main Street in Fort Scott, Kansas. Inside, authorities found the body of 53-year-old Leonard D. Zimmerman, a male resident of the city. He, along with 48-year-old Melissa L. Mitchell, had been fatally shot. The call to emergency services was made by a family member who had come to the residence and found Ms.
Mitchell deceased.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly focused on a person of interest, 23-year-old Dawson J. Mitchell, who was identified as Melissa Mitchell's son. A search for him was initiated, and he was located and taken into custody in Fort Scott the following day, on December 22, 2021. His initial arrest was on charges of theft of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and unlawful possession of controlled substances.
Following his arrest, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Fort Scott Police Department continued their investigation into the deaths of Zimmerman and Mitchell. In early January 2022, the investigation led to more serious charges against Dawson J. Mitchell. He was formally charged with two counts of premeditated first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his mother and Leonard D. Zimmerman.
