On the evening of December 21, 2021, a grim discovery was made in a home on Main Street in Fort Scott, Kansas. Inside, authorities found the body of 53-year-old Leonard D. Zimmerman, a male resident of the city. He, along with 48-year-old Melissa L. Mitchell, had been fatally shot. The call to emergency services was made by a family member who had come to the residence and found Ms. Mitchell deceased.
