In the early morning hours of May 1, 2022, the life of 33-year-old Michael Rehard, a male resident of Kansas City, Kansas, was tragically cut short. Rehard was at Sammy's Tavern in the Strawberry Hill neighborhood with his brother, Matthew, and his sister, Maria, for a family celebration. A confrontation with a man known to the family escalated, shattering the festive atmosphere with the sound of gunfire.
When the chaos subsided, Michael Rehard was dead, and two others, including his brother Matthew and a family friend, were wounded.
Neighbors reported hearing a series of gunshots shortly after 1 a.m., followed by screaming and commotion in the street. One resident who lived near the tavern saw one of the injured victims sitting on the ground outside and then discovered Michael's body inside the bar. Loved ones described Michael as a big-hearted and loyal person who was a devoted father to two young daughters. He had recently returned home and was reportedly on a positive path in his life.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led law enforcement to identify 26-year-old Mekiah D. Harris as the primary suspect. A warrant was issued for Harris's arrest on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated battery. On May 3, 2022, just two days after the fatal shooting, officers located Harris and attempted to apprehend him. This initiated a high-speed pursuit that spanned multiple counties and crossed state lines into Missouri.
The chase ended near Platte City, Missouri, where Harris abandoned his vehicle and fled into a wooded area. Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies, including the Kansas City, Missouri police and the Missouri State Highway Patrol, surrounded the area. A confrontation ensued, and Mekiah D. Harris was shot and killed by law enforcement. Authorities reported that Harris was in possession of a firearm at the time he was killed.
