In the summer of 2022, on what tragically became his 29th birthday, Daniel Wayne Ward's life was cut short in Olathe, Kansas. On the morning of July 30th, police responded to a medical call at a residence in the 1200 block of North Purdom Street. There, they discovered Ward unresponsive, suffering from what was described as a significant head injury.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, and it was later determined that his fatal injury was a gunshot wound.
The investigation into the male's death quickly led to a suspect, a 15-year-old boy who was known to Ward. The teenager, a student at Olathe North High School, was taken into custody at the scene. The Johnson County District Attorney's office initially filed a charge of first-degree murder against the teen and sought to have him tried as an adult. In addition to the murder charge, the suspect also faced a count of criminal use of a weapon for possessing a firearm as a juvenile.
As the case proceeded through the legal system, the initial serious charge against the young suspect was altered. Ultimately, he was not convicted of murder. Instead, the 15-year-old was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and criminal use of weapons. Despite the district attorney's motion, the teenager was tried as a juvenile. Court proceedings revealed that both the victim, Daniel Ward, and the teenage suspect had prior criminal records. Ward had a conviction for aggravated battery from the previous year, while the teenager had a history that included two cases of battery and one instance of disorderly conduct. The sentencing for the teenager was scheduled for December 8, 2023.
