On a tragic day in December of 2022, the life of 13-year-old Hayden Dutch Koch was cut short in her rural Baldwin City, Kansas, home. Emergency services were dispatched to the residence on the morning of December 5th, where they discovered the bodies of Hayden and her 55-year-old father, David M. Koch. The young female, born on January 6, 2009, was a caring and intelligent eighth-grade student at Bishop Seabury Academy.
Subsequent investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office revealed that Hayden had died from a gunshot wound. Her father, David, was found to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities quickly determined that the incident was contained and posed no further threat to the public. The investigation transitioned from a criminal one to a matter of fact-finding, with no other suspects being sought in connection with the deaths. The case was determined to be an apparent murder-suicide.
Hayden was remembered as a sweet, kind, and funny young girl with a playful sense of humor. She had a deep love for animals and dreamed of one day becoming a veterinarian. Her adventurous spirit was evident in her enjoyment of activities like paddleboarding and swimming. A student who excelled in science, Hayden also played volleyball for the Lawrence Landsharks. Her sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through the community, leaving friends, family, and classmates to mourn the loss of a loyal and compassionate friend who brought joy to those around her.
