In the late morning chill of February 24, 2025, the life of 40-year-old Denise Byrd, a White/Caucasian female, was tragically cut short in Kansas City, Kansas. First responders were called to the 5100 block of Leavenworth Road just before 11 a.m. following reports of a shooting. There, outside a home, they found Byrd suffering from gunshot wounds. She was rushed to a local hospital, but her injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into her death quickly took a complex turn.
A short time after Byrd was discovered, another call came in reporting a second shooting less than a mile away in the 4900 block of Cleveland Avenue. At this location, police found a man who had also been shot. He was transported to an area hospital and was reported to be in stable condition. As of now, the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department's Major Case Unit is actively investigating the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting of Denise Byrd and the wounding of the second individual.
