In the autumn of 2021, the community of the Wyandotte Towers apartment building in Kansas City, Kansas, was shaken by a series of grim discoveries. On November 2nd, the body of 25-year-old Black / African American female RauDaja Fairrow was found by building personnel who were conducting routine maintenance. Her death, along with that of another resident, 35-year-old Damon Irvin, whose body had been discovered the previous day, was ruled a homicide.
The two lived in separate apartments within the 15-story building. A third resident, a 66-year-old man, was also found deceased on the same day as Fairrow, but his death was determined to be from natural causes.
The back-to-back discoveries of two homicide victims in the same building initially left residents and law enforcement searching for answers. The police had not immediately released the causes of death for Fairrow or Irvin, leading to a sense of unease in the community. Investigators worked to piece together the events that led to the two untimely deaths, examining the building's security and video surveillance for any clues. According to court documents that would later be released, the homicides of both Fairrow and Irvin were believed to have occurred between October 28 and October 29.
An arrest was made later in November, bringing some clarity to the tragic events. A 26-year-old man, Perez D. Reed, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of RauDaja Fairrow and Damon Irvin. Reed was already a person of interest to law enforcement in connection with a string of other shootings and homicides that had occurred in the St. Louis and Kansas City areas in the preceding months. His arrest was made at a charter bus station in Independence, Missouri, by federal agents as he was traveling to St. Louis. Authorities alleged that shell casings from the other shootings linked Reed to the same. 40 caliber handgun.
