Leo Thornton, a 22-year-old from Lincolnwood, Illinois, tragically died on April 11, 2015, in Washington, D.C. Thornton fatally shot himself on the west front of the U.S. Capitol just after 1 p.m., triggering an hours-long lockdown of the Capitol and its visitors' center. He was carrying a backpack and a suitcase, which led to a thorough search by the U.S. Capitol Police.
