In the early morning hours of May 19, 2016, 44-year-old Dana Hamilton was walking down the 800 block of Southern Avenue in Southeast, D.C., when he was fatally shot. Police responded to reports of a shooting around 2:41 a.m. and found Hamilton suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Hamilton's death led police to 34-year-old Quincy Green, also known as Wayne Wright,
of Southeast, D.C. Green was arrested and charged with second-degree murder while armed. At the time of the murder, Green was on high-intensity supervision for a gun charge and was supposed to be confined to his home with a GPS tracking device. However, in a startling turn of events, it was discovered that the monitoring device had been incorrectly placed on his prosthetic leg. This critical error allowed Green to remove the leg with the tracker, leave his home undetected, and carry out the deadly assault on Hamilton.
Quincy Green, a man with a lengthy criminal history that included 25 arrests and 11 convictions as an adult, eventually pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed. In addition to the murder charge, Green also pleaded guilty to soliciting the murder of the fiancée of a potential witness in his case. In November 2019, a judge sentenced Green to 17 years in prison for the murder of Dana Hamilton. During the sentencing, Hamilton's mother expressed the enduring grief her family has suffered. Green offered an apology to the victim's family and the court before beginning his sentence.
