In the early hours of a Saturday morning in Washington, D.C., a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet on 18th Street, SE. It was approximately 12:10 a.m. on July 2, 2016, when police were called to the 3500 block for reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered a man suffering from several gunshot wounds to his upper body. The victim was identified as 30-year-old Antoine Danell McCullough, a resident of Southeast D.C.
He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
The Metropolitan Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation, appealing to the public for any information and offering a substantial reward for tips leading to an arrest and conviction. In the days that followed, detectives identified three persons of interest in connection with the fatal shooting. The investigation led to the arrests of two men, Jeremiah Jordan, 26, and Jerrell Powell, 21. Both men were charged with first-degree murder while armed.
The judicial process unfolded over the next several years. In a turn of events, Jerrell Powell pleaded down to a charge of second-degree murder while armed. During his sentencing, a remarkable moment of grace occurred as Antoine McCullough's parents, who are involved in youth ministry, publicly forgave Powell for his actions. They expressed their hope that he would turn his life around. Powell, in turn, thanked the family for their forgiveness. He was subsequently sentenced to 15 years in prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release. His co-defendant, Jeremiah Jordan, was also charged in connection with McCullough's death.
