In the winter of 2018, a burst of violence in Southeast Washington, D.C. claimed the life of 29-year-old Kenneth Poindexter. On the afternoon of Saturday, January 20th, police responded to a report of a shooting in the 4700 block of Benning Road, SE. Inside a residence, they discovered Poindexter suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved fatal.
The investigation into the homicide led to the identification and
arrest of several suspects. Over the following months and years, authorities apprehended multiple individuals in connection with the fatal shooting. Among them were Steven Robin, Antonio McKenzie, and Edward Brown, who all faced charges of first-degree murder while armed. A fourth man, Charles Young, was identified as the getaway driver and ultimately pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to voluntary manslaughter.
The path to justice was complex and saw the defendants' cases severed. Steven Robin went to trial, where a jury acquitted him of the murder charges but found him guilty of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. The cases against McKenzie and Brown proceeded separately, complicated by accusations of witness tampering while they were incarcerated.
