In the early evening of August 8, 2016, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in a Northwest Washington, D.C. neighborhood, leaving a man fatally wounded. Donald Stephen Johnson Jr., a 45-year-old Black male, was discovered by police in the parking lot of the Emery Recreation Center on the 5700 block of Georgia Avenue, NW, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics rushed him to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
Johnson, a resident of Bowie, Maryland, was a loving son and fiancé, remembered by friends as a cherished companion.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, Herman Lee Cook Jr., also of Washington, D.C. Surveillance footage from the recreation center reportedly captured the tragic events as they unfolded. According to charging documents, the video showed Johnson in the parking lot speaking with a group of people. Later, Cook is seen arriving, exiting his vehicle, and approaching Johnson. With Johnson's back turned, the assailant pulled out a pistol and opened fire, continuing to shoot even after Johnson had fallen to the ground. The gunman then calmly walked away from the scene.
A warrant for Cook's arrest was issued just two days after the shooting. Investigators were aided by evidence found at the scene, including the car Cook arrived in, which was registered in his name. A K9 unit also reportedly tracked his scent from the crime scene to his residence. Despite the warrant, Cook remained at large for several months. The search culminated on February 22, 2017, when members of the Washington/Baltimore High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area task force apprehended him. Herman Lee Cook Jr. was arrested and subsequently charged with second-degree murder while armed in connection with the death of Donald Stephen Johnson Jr. He was held without bond pending a preliminary hearing.
