In the spring of 2017, a promising life was tragically cut short on the streets of Washington, D.C. Dejon Charles Sutton, a 24-year-old Black man, was in his own neighborhood on the evening of May 10th when violence erupted. At approximately 8:40 PM, in the 6100 block of Banks Place NE, near the Maryland border and adjacent to the Watts Branch playground, the sound of gunshots pierced the night air. When police responded to the calls, they found Sutton suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was a resident of the area, living only about two blocks from where he was tragically gunned down.
Another man was also wounded in the shooting. He was discovered approximately two blocks south of the initial scene at the Capitol Heights Metro station in Maryland and was subsequently transported to a hospital for treatment of his injuries. Despite the immediate response and investigation by the D.C. police, Dejon Charles Sutton succumbed to his injuries, being pronounced dead at Prince George's Hospital Center at 11:42 PM that same night.
In the wake of the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department launched a homicide investigation, appealing to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible for Sutton's death. A reward of up to $25,000 has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons involved in the murder. However, despite the ongoing investigation by the Homicide Branch, no arrests have been made in the case. Details regarding any potential suspect or suspects have been scarce, and the case remains unsolved. The community continues to await answers and justice for the untimely death of Dejon Charles Sutton.
