In the early evening of January 18, 2022, 19-year-old Devin Brewer was sitting in his wheelchair outside his home on Cloud Place in Northeast Washington, D.C., with friends. A car slowly drove past, and a person inside opened fire, striking Brewer in the head. He and another injured person were taken to a local hospital, where Brewer succumbed to his injuries.
At the time of his death, Devin was recovering from a previous shooting in June 2021 that had left him wheelchair-bound.
The investigation into Brewer's death led police to a 15-year-old male from Hyattsville, Maryland. Evidence against the teen included a cellphone video in which he appeared to brag about the crime. Authorities believe the shooting was an act of indiscriminate firing, possibly related to a neighborhood conflict. The suspect was arrested in July 2022 and charged with first-degree murder while armed.
In January 2023, the teenage suspect pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed. The following month, a D.C. Superior Court judge ordered him to be committed to the city's Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services until he turns 21. During the emotional sentencing hearing, Devin Brewer's mother, a pastor, expressed her profound grief but also offered forgiveness to the teen, hoping he would use his time in custody to turn his life around.
