In the early hours of a summer morning in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, D.C., a burst of gunfire shattered the peace, leaving three men wounded. It was approximately 1:01 a.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2023, in the 2500 block of Ontario Road, Northwest, when officers were called to the scene of the shooting. Forty-two-year-old Vincent Martin, a Black male from Southeast, D.C., was one of the individuals found with life-threatening injuries.
While two other victims, brothers James and Jamal Morgan, were pronounced dead at the scene, first responders rushed Martin to a nearby hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life.
For two days, Vincent Martin fought for his life, but his injuries proved to be too severe. On Monday, August 7, 2023, he succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead, turning a double homicide into a triple homicide investigation for the Metropolitan Police Department. The incident cast a somber shadow over the typically vibrant neighborhood, prompting a search for those responsible for the brazen act of violence.
The investigation into the deaths of Vincent Martin and the Morgan brothers continued for several months. Initially, police issued a lookout for a male in a blue Mercedes. Then, on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, a breakthrough in the case was announced. Members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested two suspects in Fort Washington, Maryland. The men were identified as 37-year-old Renza Bryant of Northwest, D.C., and 34-year-old Jalonte Thompkins of Northeast, D.C. Both men were charged with First Degree Murder while Armed in connection with the triple homicide. Following their arrest, they waived their right to an extradition hearing and were transported to the Homicide Branch of the Metropolitan Police Department. Court proceedings were scheduled to follow, with one of the suspects later pleading not guilty.
