A separate and distinct tragedy befell another young man with a similar name just over a year earlier. On the morning of March 10, 2017, at around 11:15 AM, 24-year-old Tyrone Johnson was shot and killed in the 2300 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, SE. The investigation into his death led to the identification and arrest of three suspects.
The first two suspects, Antonio Upshaw and Jordan Woods, were apprehended on December 29, 2017. A third suspect, Gabriel Brown, was arrested on March 19, 2019. Woods, however, saw the charges against him dismissed. In a development years later, on December 6, 2023, both Brown and Upshaw accepted plea deals. Brown pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a 14-year prison sentence. Upshaw pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact to second-degree murder and was sentenced to time served, amounting to four years, nine months, and fifteen days. The sentencings brought a measure of closure to a case that had unfolded over several years, though the pain of Johnson's loss remains with his family.
