In the early morning hours of January 5, 2020, a gathering among acquaintances in Southwest Washington, D.C. took a tragic and fatal turn. Inside a residence on the 1400 block of 3rd Street, SW, 26-year-old Xavier Tate, a male resident of Northeast, D.C., was shot multiple times following an argument. The events leading to his death began as a social evening where he was present with Bratrell Hawkins, Hawkins' girlfriend, and another friend.
As the evening progressed, an argument erupted
between Hawkins and his girlfriend. This initial dispute seemed to momentarily de-escalate, but soon after, a confrontation arose between Hawkins and Tate. It was during this second altercation, at approximately 5:27 a.m., that Hawkins fatally shot Tate. First responders arrived to find Tate suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The Metropolitan Police Department quickly identified 27-year-old Bratrell Hawkins as the suspect in the shooting. An arrest warrant was issued, charging him with second-degree murder while armed. Just four days after the shooting, on January 9, 2020, Hawkins was apprehended by authorities.
In the ensuing legal process, the case against Hawkins moved through the court system. In January 2022, then 29-year-old Hawkins pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter while armed. His plea acknowledged his role in the death of Xavier Tate, bringing a legal conclusion to the tragic event that unfolded in the early hours of that January morning.
