In the early evening of February 17, 2020, police responded to a call about an unconscious man in an apartment in Northeast Washington, D.C. Inside a residence in the 2100 block of I Street, NE, they found 31-year-old Cordaro Pierre Chambers, a male, suffering from a gunshot wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services arrived at the scene and found no signs of life; Chambers was pronounced dead inside his own apartment.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch immediately
began an investigation into the shooting death. For months, the case remained under investigation as authorities worked to determine a motive and identify any suspects. A reward of up to $25,000 was offered for information that would lead to an arrest and conviction in the homicide. The investigation continued through the spring and into the summer, a period of shock and mourning for Chambers' family.
Six months after the fatal shooting, a breakthrough was made in the case. On August 18, 2020, members of the Capital Area Fugitive Task Force located and arrested a suspect. Thirty-one-year-old Stephon Green of Temple Hills, Maryland, was taken into custody and charged with First Degree Murder while Armed in connection with Chambers' death. It was noted at the time of his arrest that Green had previous arrests for carrying a pistol without a license. The arrest brought a measure of relief to a grieving family and community.
