On the morning of January 27, 2024, police in Brandon, Mississippi, received a call from a man named Tyler Gorrell, reporting that his wife had been in an accident and was dead. Officers were dispatched to the couple's home on Rockford Court. Upon arrival, what they found was not a straightforward accidental death scene. The victim, a 38-year-old female named Carri Gorrell, was deceased from a gunshot wound.
The officers at the scene quickly grew suspicious of the circumstances surrounding her death and of her husband's account of what had transpired.
The investigation that followed uncovered a more sinister story. Authorities determined that Carri Gorrell had been shot and killed, and the evidence pointed toward her 35-year-old husband, Tyler. He was arrested and faced a slew of initial charges, including murder, tampering with evidence, possession of a controlled substance, and directing or causing a youth to commit a felony. Investigators also discovered that Tyler was under the influence of drugs at the time of his wife's death; a significant quantity of LSD was recovered from their home. His bond was set at $2,050,000.
The legal process moved forward, and Tyler Franklin Gorrell eventually pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and trafficking in a controlled substance. This plea came as part of an agreement that would spare him a trial but ensure a lengthy period of incarceration. As a result of his guilty plea, the now 36-year-old was sentenced to serve thirty years in prison. The judge stipulated that he must serve the entire sentence, day for day, with no possibility of early release. District Attorney Bubba Bramlett commented on the case, stating that Gorrell had engaged in illegal drug use and then taken the life of the person he had vowed to love and protect, highlighting the devastating impact of drugs on decision-making.
