In what was later determined to be a murder-suicide, 27-year-old Amber Noelle Smith was killed in her Brandon, Mississippi home. Smith, a female, was a stay-at-home mother of two and an active member of her church and community.
Authorities reported that on April 23, 2014, Amber Smith's estranged husband, 34-year-old Chris Smith, shot and killed her before turning the gun on himself. Chris Smith was a Hinds County Sheriff's Deputy.
The Rankin County Sheriff's Department had been called to the couple's home just ten days prior to the fatal incident for a verbal dispute. During that call, Amber told the responding deputy that she and her husband were separating and that he had taken her keys to prevent her from leaving. The deputy was able to resolve the immediate issue, and Amber left the residence for the night.
Friends of Amber described her as a wonderful mother with an amazing heart, who was loved by everyone who knew her. Her death was a shock to the community, and she is remembered as a loving mother, daughter, sister, and friend. Following the tragedy, the investigation by the Rankin County Sheriff's Department concluded that Chris Smith was the sole perpetrator in the murder of his wife before he committed suicide. As the suspect took his own life, there were no arrests or trial.
