In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Washington, D.C., a dispute between two men who knew each other escalated to a fatal conclusion. On March 29, 2020, in the 700 block of Alabama Avenue, Southeast, the sounds of gunshots pierced the quiet of the neighborhood. When officers from the Seventh District of the Metropolitan Police Department arrived at approximately 1:22 a.m., they discovered a grim scene.
Inside a vehicle, they found 29-year-old Gregory Mayo, of Southwest, D.C.,
unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound. D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel were called to the location, but it was too late. Mayo showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was later transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The investigation into the death of the male victim moved swiftly. Detectives from the Homicide Branch determined that the shooting was the result of a dispute. On the very same day as the incident, an arrest was made. Twenty-four-year-old Gary Massey, a resident of Southeast, D.C., was taken into custody and charged with First Degree Murder while Armed in connection with the shooting death of Gregory Mayo.
