On a summer afternoon in Washington, D.C., a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a community, leaving tragedy in its wake. On August 24, 2022, 53-year-old James Johnson was shot and killed in what police have described as a targeted attack. The male victim, identified as a Black man, was in the unit block of O Street, Northwest, around 12:48 p.m. when the incident unfolded.
He was not the only one to lose his life that day; his 43-year-old cousin, Rashad Johnson, was also killed in the shooting, which wounded three other men.
According to witness accounts and police statements, the violence was swift and brutal. At least two shooters reportedly exited a black SUV and opened fire on a group of people gathered outside a senior citizens' home. The assailants used what were described as semiautomatic weapons, unleashing a hail of bullets before getting back into their vehicle and fleeing the scene. The area where the shooting occurred was known to law enforcement as an open-air drug market, and authorities have suggested the attack may have been related to narcotics activity.
In the immediate aftermath, emergency services arrived to a chaotic scene. James and Rashad Johnson were pronounced dead at the location, while the three other victims were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The brazen daytime shooting, which took place near a charter school on its first day of classes, sent shockwaves through the neighborhood and prompted a largescale police investigation.
Despite the public nature of the attack, the individuals directly responsible for the deaths of James and Rashad Johnson have not been apprehended. The Metropolitan Police Department has sought the public's help in identifying a black 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe with a possible Virginia temporary tag that was believed to be the getaway vehicle. A reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible. While arrests were made in connection with a retaliatory shooting that occurred hours later, no suspects have been publicly identified or charged in the specific double homicide that claimed the life of James Johnson and his cousin.
