On a warm evening just before the Fourth of July, a burst of violence shattered the night in Southeast Washington, D.C., claiming the life of 20-year-old Jordyn Simmons. A resident of Hyattsville, Maryland, she was a young woman whose life was just beginning to unfold. The incident occurred on Friday, July 3, 2020, when the sound of gunfire echoed through the 1900 block of 18th Street, Southeast.
At approximately 11:13 p.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Sixth
District rushed to the scene. There, they discovered Jordyn suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency services arrived swiftly and transported her to a local hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Jordyn Simmons succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. Friends and family would later gather to honor her memory, grappling with the sudden and tragic loss.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police also located an adult male in the vicinity who had sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment. The Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch launched a thorough investigation into the events of that fatal night.
