In the late morning of May 3, 2023, a tragedy unfolded in the 3700 block of Jamison Street, Northeast, in Washington, D.C. Twenty-three-year-old Kaijah Lamon McCoy, a Black female, was shot and killed in what would become a homicide investigation that drew the attention of the Metropolitan Police Department. The incident occurred at approximately 11:10 a.m., leaving a community in shock and a family to mourn a life cut short.
Born on October 18, 1999, Kaijah was a mother of two children,
a daughter and a son. She had a passion for caring for others, which led her to become a certified medical assistant. An entrepreneur at heart, she also founded her own business. Known for her love of family and for being the life of the party, her sudden death left a void in the lives of those who knew her.
In the weeks following the shooting, law enforcement sought the public's help, offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. The investigation soon focused on a 15-year-old male, known by the nickname 'Baby K'. This suspect was also wanted in connection with an attempted murder on a school bus in Prince George's County.
By the end of May, the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended the 15-year-old suspect in Prince George's County, Maryland. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed for his alleged role in Kaijah McCoy's death and awaited extradition to Washington, D.C.
